RECREATION LEVEL 3 - BEAM

Rec 3 Beam begins transitioning athletes from foundational beam skills into more advanced balance, body positions, and beginning connections. Athletes will continue building on all Rec 1 and Rec 2 fundamentals while developing stronger handstand work, improved jumps and turns, more controlled dance skills, a larger scale, a side handstand dismount, and the ability to connect skills together with rhythm, confidence, and presentation.

LEG SWING MOUNT → STAND

Progresses the Rec 2 mount into a smoother, more continuous movement. Athletes focus on bringing the legs together from the straddle sit and transitioning to standing with control and minimal pauses.

STRETCH JUMP

Continues developing the Stretch Jump with greater control and presentation on the beam. Athletes perform a Demi-Plié → Stretch Jump, maintaining a tight body in the air before landing in Demi-Plié and holding the landing.

HEEL SNAP ½ TURN

Progresses the High Passé and Relevé work into a Heel Snap ½ Turn. Athletes focus on the heel snap action, maintaining a tall body position, and completing the turn with balance and control.

WALKING, BALANCE & DANCE

Develops greater confidence, posture, and presentation while moving on the beam. Athletes continue forward and backward walking and kicks while introducing passé walks and maintaining control throughout each movement.

L-HANDSTAND

Progresses the Rec 2 T-Touch by allowing the athlete to kick higher into an L-Handstand position. Athletes focus on straight arms, active shoulders, straight legs, pointed toes, and control before safely returning to the beam.

SCALE

Progresses the Rec 2 Scale by increasing its size and requiring a controlled 3-second hold. Athletes focus on a straight supporting leg, straight back leg, square hips, and balance throughout the position.

SIDE HANDSTAND DISMOUNT

Introduces a handstand-based dismount from the middle of the beam. Athletes focus on kicking toward approximately 45 degrees with straight arms and a tight body, then coming off the side in a hollow position and finishing with a controlled stick.

SKILLS & CONNECTIONS

Begins teaching athletes to connect individual beam skills into smooth, continuous sequences. Coaches are encouraged to get creative with the connections, using skills developed throughout Rec 1, Rec 2, and Rec 3 to build combinations that naturally flow together. The focus should be on helping athletes develop rhythm, confidence, posture, presentation, and control while beginning to understand how individual skills become part of a complete beam routine.
