RECREATION LEVEL 2 - VAULT
Watch each skill video below, then complete the knowledge check at the end of this section. The primary goal of Rec Vault 2 is to begin developing the shapes and skills needed for a Handstand Flatback. Athletes should continue building on all Rec 1 Vault fundamentals while adding the following skills and progressions:
RUN, HURDLE, STRETCH JUMP TO RAISED SURFACE
Builds on the run, hurdle, and punch fundamentals introduced in Rec 1 while beginning to develop the shapes needed for a future Handstand Flatback. Athletes learn to create more lift from the springboard, maintain a tight, extended body position in the air, and land with control. The Handstand Fall to Flatback introduces the handstand and straight-body shapes that will eventually be combined with the vault approach.
STRAIGHT JUMP 1/2 TURN, SEAT DROP 1/2 TURN, MAD CAT DROP
Introduces turning in the air while maintaining a straight, tight body position. Athletes learn to complete the turn before landing and finish with a controlled stick.
Builds on the Rec 1 Seat Drop by introducing rotation and body control while transitioning between the trampoline and the seated position.
Reinforces the hollow/Mad Cat shape while teaching athletes to safely support their body with straight arms during a trampoline drop. This helps develop body awareness and support positions that transfer to other gymnastics skills. This will eventually progress to a donkey kick which reinforces the heel drive motion of the handstand flatback vault.
