RECREATION LEVEL 2 - FLOOR

Watch each skill video below, then complete the knowledge check at the end of this section. The primary goal of Rec Beam 2 is to begin developing greater balance, body control, and independence on the beam while introducing new dance and handstand progressions. Athletes should continue building on all Rec 1 Beam fundamentals while adding the following skills and progressions:

HANDSTAND

Builds on the handstand shapes introduced in Rec 1 by beginning to turn those positions into an actual Handstand. Athletes progress from Lunge → T → Kick to Handstand, working toward vertical with straight arms, a tight body, and legs together before learning to step down with control into a lunge.

CARTWHEEL

Builds on the Rec 1 Monkey Jumps and basic cartwheel pattern by increasing the amount of weight supported on the hands and getting the legs higher over the body. Athletes begin developing a recognizable hand-hand-foot-foot Cartwheel that finishes facing the direction they started. At this level, the goal is a recognizable Cartwheel even if the skill is not yet polished.

FORWARD ROLL

Progresses the Rec 1 Forward Roll from the wedge onto the floor. Athletes learn to roll independently while maintaining a tight tuck and rounded back, beginning and finishing with the arms by the ears and standing without using the hands.

BACKWARD ROLL

Introduces the basic action of a Backward Roll using a wedge for assistance. Athletes learn to roll backward with the hands positioned by the ears and actively push against the floor to keep pressure off the head and neck. At this level, the Backward Roll should remain on the wedge rather than progressing to the floor.

MAD CAT / PUSH-UP POSITION

Builds on the hollow/Mad Cat shape introduced in Rec 1 while developing additional shoulder and straight-arm support strength. Athletes progress from holding the position to a controlled push-up and then jumping the feet toward the hands. These shapes and strength are important foundations for Handstands, Cartwheels, and future backward skills.

BRIDGE

Builds on the Rec 1 Bridge by teaching athletes to push the shoulders forward over the hands while maintaining straight arms and an open shoulder position. Athletes also begin raising one leg to introduce the body position and weight transfer needed for a future Bridge Kick-Over and more advanced backward skills.

PLIÉ JUMP

Begins developing the leg action, rhythm, and coordination needed for a future Chassé. Athletes learn to use a controlled plié and jumping action as they begin progressing toward basic gymnastics dance combinations.

CANDLESTICK

Introduces the Candlestick shape by teaching athletes to rock backward with straight legs together, extend the hips over the shoulders, and press the arms into the floor for support. Athletes then learn to use the rocking action to return to a seated pike position or standing position.
