RECREATION LEVEL 2 - BEAM
Watch each skill video below, then complete the knowledge check at the end of this section. The primary goal of Rec Beam 2 is to begin developing greater balance, body control, and independence on the beam while introducing new dance and handstand progressions. Athletes should continue building on all Rec 1 Beam fundamentals while adding the following skills and progressions:
MOUNT PROGRESSION
Builds on the Rec 1 Leg Swing Mount by developing greater control and independence. Athletes learn to move from Front Support → Leg Swing → Straddle Sit, bring the legs together, and safely transition to standing on the beam.
STRETCH JUMP
Builds on the Demi-Plié → Relevé positions introduced in Rec 1 and begins putting them together into an actual Stretch Jump. Athletes learn to jump with a tall, extended body position and return to the beam in a controlled demi-plié, holding the landing before standing.
COUPÉ & PASSÉ FOOT POSITIONS
Introduces the correct foot placement for both Coupé and Passé while balancing on the standing leg. Athletes learn where the toe should make contact with the standing leg in each position while maintaining a tall, controlled body shape. These positions are important foundations for future turns, dance elements, and the Heel Snap ½ Turn.
HEEL SNAP ½ TURN INTRODUCTION
Introduces the dance positions and body control needed for a future Heel Snap ½ Turn. Athletes first learn Coupé and High Passé, then progress from High Passé → Relevé with rounded arms, developing the balance and posture needed before adding the turning action.
WALKING & BALANCE
Develops confidence, balance, posture, and presentation while moving along the beam. Athletes practice forward, backward, and sideways walks, along with forward kicks, while maintaining straight legs, pointed toes, and controlled body positioning.
HANDSTAND PROGRESSION - T TOUCH
Builds on the Lunge → Lever → Lever Lunge work introduced in Rec 1. The T Touch begins adding hand contact with the beam while maintaining the lever shape, helping athletes become comfortable transferring weight toward their hands. This progresses toward future handstand work on beam.
SCALE
Introduces one-leg balance while teaching athletes to maintain a tight, controlled body position. Athletes begin with a small Scale while learning to keep their posture and balance with the arms held in a press. This progresses toward a larger, more extended Scale in later levels.
MAD CAT DISMOUNT
Builds on the Rec 1 Mad Cat Dismount by increasing the size and control of the leg swing. Athletes should maintain a strong support position as they swing the leg off the beam and finish with a controlled, stuck landing.
