RECREATION LEVEL 1 - BEAM
Watch each skill video below, then complete the knowledge check at the end of this section. The primary goal of Rec Beam 1 is to introduce the basic balance, body positions, and movement patterns needed for future beam skills. Athletes will begin developing confidence and control on the beam through basic mounts, jumps, turns, handstand shapes, and dismount progressions.
FRONT SUPPORT & LEG SWING MOUNT
Front Support develops the strength, tight body position, and straight-arm support needed to safely control the body on the beam. The leg swing introduces a basic beam mount while teaching the athlete to support their body and control the leg as they move into a straddle seated position.
DEMI-PLIÉ TO RELEVÉ
Demi-Plié to Relevé introduces the leg action and body positions used for a future stretch jump. Demi-plié means a small bend of the knees, similar to a mini squat, while relevé means rising onto the toes. Athletes should learn to move from a controlled demi-plié into a tall, straight relevé position.
RELEVÉ & PIVOT
Relevé & Pivot Develops balance and body control in a tall relevé position while introducing the basic turning action of a pivot.
HANDSTAND WORK
Introduces the shapes and body positions needed for future handstand skills. The “T” shape is the lever position, which teaches the athlete how to shift their body forward while maintaining a straight, tight line. The progression is Lunge → Lever → Lever Lunge, building the foundation for a future levered handstand.
MAD CAT DISMOUNT
A Mad Cat Dismount introduces a basic beam dismount while reinforcing the Mad Cat support position and teaching the athlete to safely swing the leg off the side of the beam. The goal is to progress the athlete toward a side handstand dismount.
STUCK LANDING
Stuck Landing teaches athletes to land from the beam with balance and control, establishing the fundamentals of a proper gymnastics landing.
